Mission Moment: Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM)

It is your mission support that makes these ELCA ministries possible.  Together we are doing What Matters in God’s kingdom!  Thank you!

Meet our synod’s new Young Adults in Global Mission!

Another cohort of Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) volunteers have recently accepted the call into service, beginning in August.  The YAGM program has seen significant growth since its beginnings in 1999, and this is especially true since the start of the Campaign for the ELCA.  In the past five years, the average number of volunteers sent into service each year was 30 more than in the years prior to the Campaign.  This growth has only been made possible through generous individuals, congregations and synods who support this program and the faithful young adults who answer God’s call to service.  And with approximately 35% of YAGM alumni entering seminary, it’s also a strategic and timely investment.

Among the 80 newly called YAGM volunteers, two of them have named a congregation, campus ministry, ELCA camp or ELCA college/university as a faith home within the South-Central Synod of Wisconsin.  They are:

Rachel Perkins – Faith Lutheran Church in Janesville.  She will be serving in Southern Africa, and  John Baynton – Intervarsity Christian Fellowship in Madison, Luther Memorial in Madison and Blackhawk Church in Madison.

The YAGM volunteers will be sent to serve in 14 countries in 11 country programs alongside our companions in Argentina/Uruguay, Australia, Cambodia, Central Europe (Hungary & Servia), Jerusalem/West Bank, Madagascar, Mesico, Rwanda, Senengal, Southern Africa and the United Kingdom.  Young adults serve in a variety of areas including congregational ministry, human rights work, development projects, healthcare, education and youth work.  A year of service through the YAGM program helps young adults to think more critically about their own identity, God’s work in the world, and their place within it all.

Watch What Matters for more updates on these two young adults and their journey.  We will be publishing links to their blogs and newsletters when they become available.  For now, please keep them in your prayers and thank you for the support that your mission support provides these young disciples.  Your offerings and prayers are greatly appreciated!

God’s blessings to you Rachel and John!  We will be walking wet with you!

Might your son or daughter be ready for this opportunity?

Welcome Home!

It is hard to believe that the 2018 ELCA Youth Gathering is now history. The memories of the week, however, will last a lifetime for the youth that you accompanied on the journey. The 724 youth and adults from our synod joined the 31,242 registered participants in Houston for an amazing week. I pray that the experience was uplifting and inspirational for your group and that your homecomings have been joyful.

As we close out the 2018 Gathering I invite you to stay connected. Over the next weeks the Gathering will continue to upload videos from the week to the ELCA YouTube channel HERE. Wondering about the impact of the 2018 ELCA Youth Gathering?

So, what’s next? Planning for the 2021 ELCA Youth Gathering being held in Minneapolis has already begun and will continue over the next year as a theme is developed and planning teams are assembled. Continue to follow the Gathering Facebook page HERE along with our synod website HERE for all the details beginning in 2019.

It has been an honor to walk alongside each one of you for the past two years prior to and in Houston this past week. I continually pray for each of you and your ministries in the future. Thank you once again for your leadership and for making the ELCA Youth Gathering a part of your summer plans.

And always remember, “There’s Grace For That!” 🙂

In Christ-

2018 ELCA Youth Gathering Prayers – For Use in Congregations During Youth Gathering Weekend

Please hold in prayer our 59 congregations and 724 youth and adults who are participating in the ELCA Youth Gathering June 27 through July 1 in Houston, Texas.

Good and gracious God, we thank the Holy Spirit for calling those participating in the 2018 ELCA Youth Gathering to travel, worship, serve, learn, and play alongside 30,000 other participants and those they will meet along the way. We know that God’s call changes everything. As they realize how God has used this experience to transform them, know that we should be ready to hear the new hope they have for the world, our community and church. We hope that we will be open to hearing your stories and that we will be open to being changed by the stories we hear. We know that God’s hope changes everything.

Hear Us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

Almighty God, we thank you for calling your children to the ELCA Youth Gathering. As you have shown your love by sending your Son to live among us, we pray that your Holy Spirit helps them to be an expression of your constant and gracious presence in the world. We trust and give you thanks that Jesus changes everything.

Hear Us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

Drop off window of time10:00 – 12:00 noon

Bethel Lutheran Church – 312 Wisconsin Avenue, Madison

If you have collected books for this in-gathering for the ELCA Youth Gathering, this Saturday is the drop off day.

Thank you to all congregations who have participated.  You are doing what matters!

The Gathering has recognized the need to lift up literacy in Houston. In joining the Gathering’s Blast Off for Books campaign, you will help ensure bright futures for Houston’s students. The books you donate will be distributed at community book fairs, camps and other events around the city as part of the Gathering’s Service Learning experience. By putting books in the hand’s of Houston’s economically disadvantaged students, you can help change lives.

The list of books can be found on the ELCA’s website:  http://bit.ly/BlastOffForBooks

We will be collecting books as a synod and will transport them to Houston with the synod buses. So, please begin collecting books and you may drop them off at Bethel Lutheran in Madison on June 23, 2018 from 10am-12pm and we will load them into vans and will drive them down. If your group is traveling on the synod bus, flying to Houston OR even if your congregation is not attending the Gathering you are welcome to collect books and drop them off in order to be included in this important in-kind offering.

LWR Service Project for VBS

Looking for a Service Project to Incorporate into This Summer’s Vacation Bible School?

Assemble Kits of Care for Lutheran World Relief! There are many types of Kits to bring youth together in service to our neighbors in need:

  • School Kits: Simple school supplies, like notebooks, pencils and scissors, make a world of difference for families that struggle to afford their children’s education
  • Personal Care Kits: Basic hygiene items – soap, nail clippers, a towel – are crucial to keeping families healthy, especially after leaving their homes because of war or natural disasters
  • Fleece Tie Blankets: In a hospital room or on the hard ground, these handmade blankets provide protection and a sense of comfort

LWR has a number of resources available to help VBS leaders collect items, assemble kits and track them as they travel around the world. Visit lwr.org/kits to get started!

2018 ELCA Youth Gathering Update

Breaking Youth Gathering News Regarding Busses

As of today, we have over 700 youth and adults from across the synod registered for the 2018 ELCA Youth Gathering next summer.

Over HALF of those registered are also registered to travel with us on the Synod Buses. This means the buses are now at capacity; however, we are exploring options for adding additional busses via another bus company but can only do so if we can fill these additional buses. If your congregation is interested in taking a synod bus to Houston, you must e-mail synod coordinator, Jason Xiong at scsw.elcayg@gmail.com by next Tuesday, December 19, 2017. After this date, we will consider registration closed and at that point we will be able to determine if we have enough interest to try and secure additional buses and hotel rooms. All the information you need such as timelines, forms, meetings, busing, and more can now be found on the synod website. Visit: https://scsw-elca.org/ELCA_Youth_Gathering.aspx

Early Bird Registration is OPEN at www.elca.org/gathering. Need Help? Have Questions? If you have questions or need help with anything; please reach out to our Synod Gathering Coordinator, Jason Xiong by e-mail at scsw.elcayg@gmail.com or (608) 381-2861.
