Courses operate on a semester basis, following a January - December calendar, and meet on the third weekend of each month except for the summer months.  The twelve basic courses of Lay School are offered in a pattern of Year A (taught in odd years) and Year B (taught in even years).  Enrollees may begin the Lay School of Ministry either in Year A or B.  During each semester, one class meets on Friday evening and the other two on Saturday.  Review  the Lay School Course Schedule.

All classes take place at St. James Lutheran Church, 427 S. Main Street, Verona, Wisconsin.

Elective courses are available as a Year C continuing education for those who complete the Lay School of Ministry curriculum and in some instances, for other lay leaders.  These courses are designed as in-depth treatments of topics with a focus on the practice of ministry (e.g., worship leadership, preaching, bible study facilitator).  One elective is CEME (Cultural Exploration of Ministry Experiences) designed as an alternative for Clincal Pastoral Experience required of all AiM candidates within the synod.  All these electives are offered only with sufficient enrollment.

Courses and Faculty

The faculty members for the Lay School of Ministry are selected from the very talented pool of seminary professors and rostered leaders within the church.

The courses include:

  • Old and New Testament Studies
  • Theology and Lutheran Confessions
  • History of Christianity

  • Faith Formation
  • Christian Ethics
  • Ministry and Mission of the Church
