During the Summer of 2004, members and staff of Lutheran Church of Peace in Platteville were looking at ways they could better use their unique fellowship space to serve their members and the community. It was pointed out that Platteville and the surrounding area had a few adults and older youth with disabilities that were living at home. Families were contacted and a vision was shared for a night of food, fellowship (crafts and games), and a movie. This would provide some great social time for the “youth” and some time away for dinner, shopping, or rest, for each of the caregivers. It turns out the need was even greater than they had originally understood. Now in its fifth year of providing a monthly night of food, fellowship, and a movie, Lutheran Church of Peace averages 25-30 regular members in its redefined “youth” group. The members of this youth group range in age from 16 to 55 and have become a close knit group of friends sharing stories, games, and a meal.“I run into some of the participants from time to time at the store or other places,” says Gabe Dorrell, Director of Youth and Family Education at LCOP. “I think it is fun to have a 53-year old ask me when the next youth group meeting will be held.” Gabe and a small group of leaders have been the primary persons responsible for gathering volunteers for the past couple of years and insist that it is more fun than work. Pastor Jeff Pedersen, a regular volunteer, has been known to get a little competitive in his Uno playing. This results in some razzing between meetings with a few of the regular participants.“Respite is a huge blessing to not only those who attend, but also for their caregivers and for those who volunteer. We love the friendships that have been developed. God has truly blessed us with this opportunity,” says Gabe. Respite Night takes place every 3rd Friday of the month from 5:30 – 9:30 and Gabe says anyone who wants to come and volunteer is welcome. The meal is free. As someone who recently took Gabe up on that offer, I highly suggest making the short trip to Platteville to witness a truly meaningful ministry in action. We think this is a wonderful example of God’s Work. Our Hands! |
