Self reliance can take us a long way in life, and then it begins to limit us.  Consulting with others can open up pathways we never would have discovered so easily on our own, if at all.

Since 1994, the South-Central Synod’s ASSIST program has encouraged our rostered leaders and their family members to utilize confidential psychological consultation by providing for an initial 3 sessions at The Integral Psychology Center in Madison.  The intent is to provide early consultation before things get too overwhelming as well as ease the way for getting help when things are severe.

In addition to in-office services, drop-in services will be offered at the annual Bishop’s Convocation on Monday, October 19 , where both rostered leaders and spouses are encouraged to attend.  Presenting concerns center on depression, anxiety, work stress, marital and family issues, congregational conflict and other concerns common to ministry, such as loneliness.

Phone consultation is also provided throughout the year to address counseling and referral needs for parishioners as well as to support clergy with challenging congregational issues.  As a preventive mental health program, ASSIST also provides subscriptions to an email wellness publication, Psyche & Spirit, written by ASSIST providers, addressing self care for clergy and the psychological aspects of ministry.  Synod members are also allowed to reprint articles for their congregational newsletters for the benefit of congregational wellness.

It continues to be our privilege to serve our rostered leaders, their families and the congregations of our synod though the ASSIST program.  Those who utilize the program greatly appreciate the help they receive.
