Practice DiscipleshipLeadership Development for the Sake of Faith Formation
The purpose of Practice Discipleship is to develop leaders in congregations for the sake of faith formation in young people. Practice Discipleship is following Jesus as a way of life through leadership development and faith formation. We are people who are rooted and growing in faith in Jesus Christ. As we deepen our faith we are called to develop as leaders who are equipped in theology, theory, and skills that are then sent to share the story of Christ so others can be rooted and growing in faith.

What is Practice Discipleship?
Practice Discipleship is an initiative of the ELCA to raise up leaders for the sake of faith formation. Practice Discipleship is calling leaders to come together to have meaningful conversations about ministry, and to gain tips and tools to help all people on our journey of being a lifelong follower of Christ.

Practice Discipleship is for all church leaders – volunteers and paid staff….pastors, children, youth and family staff, councils, and other ministry leaders!

Practice Discipleship focus’ on the exploring seven faith practices (serve, give, encourage, study, worship, pray, invite) by helping leaders to live out their baptismal promises to live, hear, proclaim, strive and serve.

How does Practice Discipleship work?
Curriculum is written by well-established ELCA partners. Each synod has a coach who participates in an intensive training to learn the curriculum. Each synod then forms a team to work on and present the curriculum in forms that speak to our synod. Then PD team will then schedule workshops throughout the synod to help train and raise-up leaders and congregations. Through each workshop, leaders are then equipped, connected, and sent out into their congregations.

Find the SCSW PD Team at LEAD, Synod Assembly, and other opportunities in the synod. Or INVITE us to come to you! Our team is ready to lead a variety of workshops and conversations that are catered to the needs of your congregation and your leadership development needs.

What to expect at a workshop:
In each workshop, you can expect the coach and/ or team to present a learning conversation that is interactive, fun, and meaningful to today’s ministry. All supplies are provided. Minimal fees may be associated with group workshops if a meal is provided; otherwise curriculum and learning opportunities are free! Come dressed casual and be ready to share and learn with other leaders!

What types of workshops are offered?
Workshops are offered on: Prayer, Confirmation, Children and Youth, Service Learning, Small Group Leading, Framing Ministry, Telling Our Story, and much much more!
